HERMANTOWN — A new study of the Midway Road corridor near Pike Lake northwest of Hermantown aims to make the busy stretch of road safer.
St. Louis County Public Works is kicking off its corridor study with a public meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, June 2, at Hermantown City Hall. The meeting will also be livestreamed.
The 2-mile stretch between Highway 194 and North Pike Lake Road is heavily traveled by large vehicles and has a variety of safety concerns, including a high density of access points and frontage road intersections, an aging traffic signal and a lack of pedestrian and bicyclist accommodations.
The study will look at lane configurations, on-street parking, access management, pedestrian and bicyclist facilities and intersections, with a focus on Midway Road at Highway 53 and at Martin Road.
Engineers will draw on public input to develop recommended layouts for future construction. Input will also be gathered from local businesses and public agency representatives from municipalities, schools, administration, engineering, maintenance, planning, law enforcement and emergency response.
