Chippewa National Forest workers from the Deer River station extinguish two human-caused fires in the Chippewa National Forest on March 12, 2024.

With low humidity, high winds and record-breaking temperatures expected, fire danger remains high in most of the state.

With snowpack melting down and drying up, plus high winds, the National Weather Service issued a red flag warning for 27 Minnesota counties through 7 p.m. Monday, March 10.

A red flag warning means fires can spread quickly and grow out of control under the predicted weather conditions, including strong winds and low relative humidity. The DNR will not issue or activate open burning permits during the Red Flag Warning, and even campfires are discouraged.

Fire danger remains high in most of the state as record-breaking warm temperatures are expected this week. By 2 p.m. Monday, Brainerd had already broken its previous record of 58 degrees in 2012, recording 63 at the airport.
