ST. PAUL — The Detroit Lakes gymnastics team won its sixth Class A championship Friday, Feb. 21 — its first since the Lakers won five in a row from 2015 to 2019.
The team had the highest score in both uneven parallel bars (36.425) and vault (35.575) at the Roy Wilkins Auditorium in St. Paul.
"It's just a big lift off our shoulders because we worked since the beginning of the season all the way up to now just to get this one thing," Schander told the Minnesota State High School League.
The Lakers displayed their prowess in the vault during the individual and all-around competition Saturday, with half the podium made up of DL athletes. Junior Maggie Schander took home the gold, and junior Addy Laux finished fourth, junior Olivia Gag seventh and senior Maya Schlauderaff eighth.
Schander is also the Class A all-around runner-up (37.350), finishing second in floor exercise (9.450) and fourth on the uneven bars (9.300).
Laux also placed in the all-around competition, finishing seventh (36.175) and taking home the sixth-place medal in uneven bars (9.100).
Bemidji senior Aubrey DeWitt was the sole Northern Minnesota athlete in the Class AA meet. She finished sixth in the uneven bars (9.175).
Full results from the meet can be found on the MSHSL's website.
