ELY — A project seeking to reduce hazardous wildfire fuel in areas surrounded by the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on three sides is open for public review and comment.
The Fernberg Corridor Project is intended to take 20 years and is located in Lake County, east and south of Ely. Draft environmental assessment documents for the project are available at the Superior National Forest website through Friday, Feb. 14.
The purpose is to minimize the potential effects from a wildfire where the Boundary Waters abuts residential areas, known as the Wildland Urban Interface. It’s also intended to improve wildlife habitat and enhance recreational opportunities and scenery.
Previously planned open houses are now replaced with a 30-minute informational video for the public to view.
Visit the Fernberg Corridor Landscape Management Project webpage for more information.
All comments must be submitted in writing and submitted to the project webpage, or submitted in writing to the Kawishiwi District Ranger Office, Attn: Fernberg Project, 1393 Highway 169, Ely, MN 55731.
