Gov. Tim Walz's office highlighted the area's fishing, outdoor recreation and resort community in its announcement.

CROSSLAKE — The city of Crosslake will host the Governor’s Fishing Opener this year, Gov. Tim Walz’s office announced Jan. 2.

The event will take place May 9 and 10.

A news release said it will showcase the area’s natural beauty, diversity of fish species and hospitality.

“I am thrilled to bring the longtime tradition of the Governor’s Fishing Opener to Crosslake,” Walz said in the release. “This region is known for its phenomenal fishing and outdoor recreation. It is also home to an incredible resort community, making Crosslake the perfect place to kick off summer.”

This year will be the 77th governor’s fishing opener, a tradition since 1948. The event was designed to promote Minnesota’s recreation industry and in recent years has served as a kickoff for the summer tourism season.

“We’re bringing the Governor’s Fishing Opener north again, and we are excited to celebrate in the Crosslake area,” said Lauren Bennett McGinty, executive director of Explore Minnesota, in the release.

“Along with excellent fishing and outdoor recreation, this area of Minnesota boasts a strong community of resorts, some dating back almost 100 years. These small businesses have provided unique experiences for visitors to our state for generations and continue to make Minnesota the best place to enjoy summer."

  • When the garden or farmers market gives you everything at once, the best way to handle it is to return to the fundamentals: roast, grill, bake, pickle, can, dry, freeze and sauté. These aren’t just methods, they’re survival tools during harvest season. Especially grilling. Because it’s summer. And everything tastes better with a little char and a lot of butter. This week, Amy and Heidi talked to Erin Haefele of Green Scene in Walker, Minnesota, "a charming food haven nestled in the heart of rural northern Minnesota where small-town warmth meets big-city sophistication." Erin inspires us with simple preparations to deliciously fresh garden ingredients. And we hear from Amy's friend Beth Friedrichson from Wisconsin, who gushes about dilly beans and life on the farm with chickens and alpacas.Lots of folks phoned in to talk about their harvests, whether it was peonies in Stillwater, garlic near Detroit Lakes, urban front yard CSAs in Minneapolis, potato varieties in Deer River or stuffed grape leaves in Chicago, you had a story to tell.
