WALKER — A popular campground on the shore of Leech Lake in the Chippewa National Forest will have a shorter camping season next summer to accommodate renovations.
The 44-site Stony Point Campground is 14 miles east of Walker. It will be open May 9 through Aug. 4 and transition to first-come, first-serve on July 19 in preparation for construction.
In a new release, the Forest Service addressed the early closure may impact visitors who enjoy camping later in the season.
"The closure allows the Forest to make several much-needed updates and improvements to enhance visitor experiences at Stony Point for years to come," said Ann Long Voelkner, Walker District Ranger.
The project will address deferred maintenance by constructing a new well and well house, a new water distribution system and a new electrical system with 50-amp service to each campsite, according to the Forest Service.
Leading up to the campground’s closure, water may be intermittently unavailable, there may be increased noise and some areas may be closed.
Officials plan to open Stony Point Campground for its regular season in 2026.
