BEMIDJI — A man is in the hospital after a 10-year-old boy accidentally shot him with a hunting rifle Sunday morning in Helga Township, south of Bemidji.
According to a post on its Facebook page, the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office responded to the call and found 50-year-old Gary Peters bleeding from gunshot wounds. Peters and the boy were deer hunting during the youth hunting season over the weekend.
Investigators said Peters instructed the boy to unload his rifle after returning to the truck. But the boy squeezed the trigger while doing so and Peters was in the line of fire. The bullet struck Peters and went through both buttocks.
He was transported first to Sanford Health Hospital in Bemidji before he was airlifted to Fargo, due to the seriousness of his injuries.
