BEMIDJI— A handful of special elections are scheduled Tuesday, Aug. 8, in Minnesota.
Minnesota has uniform election dates to limit when special elections can take place: the second Tuesday in February, the second Tuesday in April, the second Tuesday in May, the second Tuesday in August, and the first Tuesday after the first Monday in November.
In Hubbard County, Aug. 8 marks a special electionto fill a vacancy created when then-commissioner Dan Stacey resigned. Hubbard County’s District 4 includes the cities of Akeley and Laporte, and the townships Guthrie, Hart Lake, Hendrickson, Lakeport, Mantrap, Steamboat River and Thorpe.
Stacey was named in a criminal investigation involving alleged criminal sexual conduct and last attended a board meeting in November 2022. Stacey’s term expires Jan. 6, 2025.
Two candidates advanced from the May special primary election to fill the District 4 seat on the Hubbard County Board: Lyle Howg of Laporte and Steven Keranen of Nevis.
In Koochiching County, voters will select from four candidates in a special primary on Aug. 8 to fill the District 5 seat. Dale Erickson of Birchdale, Rich Mastin of Big Falls, Dale Promersberger of Big Falls and Erika Stoltzman of Margie are on the ballot for this race in Koochiching County.
The two candidates with the most votes will advance to the special election Tuesday Nov. 7, for this term that expires in January 2025.
This is Koochiching County’s largest district geographically, containing the cities and towns of Big Falls, Birchdale, Loman, Mizpah and Northome.
A special election became necessary upon the death of Koochiching County District 5 Commissioner Wayne Skoe in February, according to a news release.
Two candidates are vying to fill another county commissioner vacancy in Roseau County, created when District 4 Commissioner Russell Walker resigned.
Kermit Jensen and Tim Palmquist, both of Warroad, are running for the seat that expires Jan. 2, 2025. This district contains 12 townships in the southeastern segment of Roseau County.
In addition to the Koochiching Special Election on Nov. 7, some Northern Minnesota school districts will put questions to voters on ballots.
Nashwauk-Keewatin will have a school board member special election to fill a vacancy on Nov. 7.
Independent School District No. 317 in Deer River, ISD No. 318 in Grand Rapids and ISD No. 182 in Crosby-Ironton will each ask voters a question.
