Itasca Co Sheriff's Office investigating suspicious death in Deer River

The call prompting the investigation started as a welfare check early Tuesday morning, June 13, 2023.

DEER RIVER — The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding a suspicious death in Deer River.

According to a news release, deputies responded to a home on the 500 block of Fourth Street Southeast early on the morning of Tuesday, June 13, in response to a citizen call requesting a welfare check. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a dead man inside the home.

This is an ongoing investigation, the sheriff’s office stated, and there is no immediate threat to the public.

“More information will be released upon completion of an autopsy and after family notifications have been made,” the release stated.

The Itasca County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted in this investigation by the Deer River Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
