Honor the Earth Rural Rising Thursday January 12th in Aitkin with Shanai Matteson and Annie Humphrey

featuring musicians Annie Humphrey, David Huckfelt, Jeremy Ylvisaker and Aurora Baer

KAXE tells the stories of the people and the land of northern Minnesota.

Today on the Morning Show we heard from Shanai Matteson and Annie Humphrey. They came into the studios to talk about Thursday January 12, 2023's Rural Rising event at Sampaguita in downtown Aitkin.

Our conversation was about how art and gathering with communities can make change in the rural areas we live in....

Issues that will be explored have to do with creating sustaining rural economies - Shanai talked about how large global corporations and their interest in rural northern Minnesota when it comes to things like mining copper nickel. There is a proposed new copper nickel plant in Tamarack MN, called Talon Metals. There's a local group: Tamarack Water Alliance that is organizing locally about the need for clean water to protect the sacred wild rice.
