Judge Matthew R. Mallie defeated opponent Henry C. Ambelang in the race for Ninth Judicial District Seat 2.

Mallie, 56, is chambered in Crow Wing County and has been a practicing attorney in the Brainerd Lakes area for approximately 20 years. He was first appointed by Gov. Tim Walz in 2019.

Ambelang is an assistant public defender for the Ninth Judicial District in Bemidji.

The position is one of 27 district court judgeships in the Ninth Judicial District, which serves north-central and northwestern Minnesota.

The Ninth Judicial District includes most of northwestern and north-central Minnesota, including Aitkin, Beltrami, Cass, Clearwater, Crow Wing, Hubbard, Itasca, Kittson, Koochiching, Lake of the Woods, Mahnomen, Marshall, Norman, Pennington, Polk, Red Lake and Roseau counties.

There were 13 judges in the district up for election this year, but this was the only contested race.

He will begin a six-year term in January.
