Danielson clear frontrunner in Carlton County sheriff race; Walsh also advances

Dan Danielson and Chad Walsh will both advance to the general election for Carlton County sheriff on Nov. 3, 2026.

Dan Danielson and Chad Walsh are advancing to the Nov. 3, 2026, general election, based on unofficial results from Minnesota's primary election.

Three-quarters of Carlton County primary voters cast ballots for Chief Deputy Dan Danielson in the three-way primary for county sheriff on Tuesday, Aug. 11.

Longtime Sheriff Kelly Lake is retiring and endorsed Danielson.

"I am running to combine my executive readiness with my lifetime of community roots to protect our taxpayers, support our staff, and ensure a safe, secure future for the county I have always called home," Danielson said.

Chad Walsh, who has positioned himself as an outsider in the race, received 14.31% of the vote and will face Danielson in the general election.

Jason Syrett came in third with 9.36% of the vote.
