Get to know the volunteers behind the mic on KAXE. This week we find out more from On The River and After Dark host and volunteer, Gina the Knife.

Which shows do you DJ?

On the River and KAXE After Dark

When did you start volunteering at the station?

August 2024

How did you first hear about KAXE?

My partner

Your favorite recent album or artist?

Gotta say Young Gun Silver Fox's "Pleasure". There were so many amazing albums this year but this one I bought on vinyl and continue to jam all the way through. It is so weirdly nostalgic for me. Reminds me of jamming with my ma in the car when I was young. Or that beautiful time in the late 70s where just about every album released you could listen to all the way through.

Who got you into music?

Both of my parents. I happily don't know what life looks like without a soundtrack. :)

Most memorable concert or festival?

Donna Summer with my grandmother, mother and sister

Tell us about your favorite KAXE memory.

The rainbow coming out during Jeremie Albino at Riverfest!

Favorite fellow on-air DJ at KAXE?

Sarah Sarah

What hobbies do you have outside of DJing?

I have Star Trek and Stargate pollinator gardens I tend to every year. I knit, crotchet, collect vinyls, go to way too many Comic Cons, help my community as much as I can.

What's a musical ick for you?

People with beautiful voices using AutoTune. I can't do it! It's also the only thing I'm mad at Cher about.

Prince or Dylan?

Prince

KAXE is turning 50 in 2026! Why should KAXE exist for another 50 years?

Having community radio is beyond important to keep us aware of how our neighbors are doing, feeling connected to them, knowing our surroundings, finding amazing new artists in our area of all forms, weather, highlights folks who are just all around great people that are our neighbors, forming bonds and feelings of security knowing someone out there is making sure if you are in need they may know the way to help. Just straight an awesome way to bring people together!

Gina the Knife's 51 (BONUS!) Songs

In honor of KAXE turning 50, we asked our volunteers to send us a playlist of 50 songs that help tell their musical story.

Gina gifted a bonus song for this week's Beyond the Voice totaling 51 songs. Find her playlist here to play on your preferred streaming platform.

Dan was born on the south side of Chicago and remembers dancing to Booker T and the MG's as his 1st musical memory. What followed has been a lifelong adventure of hearing new music and being exposed to the people and communities that produced the artists. Forwards in all directions!
