Get to know the volunteers behind the mic on KAXE. This week we find out more from the longtime host of "Green Cheese" and "On The River" volunteer, Brandon Chase.

Which shows do you DJ?

Green Cheese and On The River

When did you start volunteering at the station?

1996

How did you first hear about KAXE?

Tuned it in while visiting grandparents that lived south of Akeley. Probably 1978.

Your favorite recent album or artist?

The Red Clay Strays

Who got you into music?

My mother said I learned how to use the record player around age 2. Music has always been in my life, my head always has a song in it.

Most memorable concert or festival?

Tragically Hip final show at MTS arena in Winnipeg.

Tell us about your favorite KAXE memory.

Wow, Mark Tarner broadening my musical repertoire and helping me hone my on-air skills. Then being awarded the Volunteer of the Year totally unexpectedly. Lastly the personal connections to many volunteers and listeners, some I've met and some not. I can't boil it down to just one memory. They're still building.

Favorite fellow on-air DJ at KAXE?

Again, how can I pick one? I loved listening to Scott Hall in the morning. DJ the DJ has introduced me to many artists I have grown to love. Mike Spry also plays awesome music shows. Heidi Holtan has always held a soft spot in my heart. And last but definitely not the least is Julie Crabb, for obvious reasons.

What hobbies do you have outside of DJing?

I enjoy adventure snowmobiling and motorcycling. A backpack full of clothes, no specific destination, and let life guide me (with music in my helmet of course).

What's a musical ick for you?

Synthesized voice

Prince or Dylan?

Dylan

KAXE is turning 50 in 2026! Why should KAXE exist for another 50 years?

A healthy tree can grow for hundreds of years, they may lose a limb but continue to grow. We didn't plant the seed, but we owe it to the tree (KAXE/KBXE) to nurture it and care for it until the next volunteer comes along to help keep it watered.

Brandon's 50 Songs

In honor of KAXE turning 50, we asked our volunteers to send us a playlist of songs that help tell their musical story.

We grabbed these songs from Brandon's latest On the River show in January of 2026. We know you'll enjoy it!

Find Brandon's songs here to play on your preferred streaming platform.

Dan was born on the south side of Chicago and remembers dancing to Booker T and the MG's as his 1st musical memory. What followed has been a lifelong adventure of hearing new music and being exposed to the people and communities that produced the artists. Forwards in all directions!
