Album of the Week: Carry Me Home by Mavis Staples and Levon Helm

Mavis Staples and Levon Helm and Carry Me Home - out May 20th

When music is created between longtime friends, magic happens. That magic is palpable on the new release of an old recording from Mavis Staples and Levon Helm. In 2011 at Helm's studios in Woodstock, NY, this recording took place over the course of one night during the Midnight Rambles sessions Helm created.

This album not only marks one of the last recorded performances from Helm before he died in 2012, it was also the last time the two friends would see each other, marking this album with even more significance. Staples grew up in and on music, performing with The Staple Singers before embarking on a solo career. Since then she has collaborated with an incredible array of musicians and artists. A fellow constant collaborator, Helm is best known for his influential drumming and vocals in The Band.

Having known each other for 35 years, the two iconic musicians created music together that special night covering other greats like Bob Dylan, Curtis Mayfield, Nina Simone, The Rolling Stones and of course, The Band.

The music director at KAXE since 2014, Kari (pronounced Car-ee) Hedlund reviews music on the daily. She also hosts New Music every Wednesday (2 and 10 p.m.) and Sunday (noon), along with the KAXE Morning Show on Thursdays.
