The School Board voted down the alternative schedule 4-2. In the coming months, the district will have to figure out how else to cut 12% of its budget.

Superintendent Pat Rendle will bring the alternative schedule application to the Board on Feb. 11, 2026, for what he wants to be a final decision.

The district plans to open a school-based health center by the end of 2026 using a state grant. The work is a continuation of efforts to meet students' needs.

Repairing or replacing aging facilities, modernizing technology or simply adding more operating dollars to the bottom line were among the asks school districts put forth.

Aitkin, Badger, Clearbrook-Gonvick, Cook County, Crosby-Ironton, Deer River, Hibbing, Lake of the Woods, Roseau, Wadena-Deer Creek, Walker-Hackensack-Akeley, Warroad & Win-E-Mac are the districts with special elections.

Sixteen school districts and one township in the Northland will have special elections on Nov. 4, 2025. Early voting begins Sept. 19.
