Events Up North Aug. 17-23: Fossils in Chisholm, Itasca County Fair in Grand Rapids

Events this week include a family forest day in Bemidji and an artist reception near Deerwood.

It's another busy week in Northern Minnesota. Here are some events to check out:

Tuesday, Aug. 18

  • Tuesday Summer Concert Series - noon at Grand Rapids Evangelical Free Church featuring the Grand Rapids Area Big Band (final concert of the season)
  • Kids' Night - 5-7 p.m. at Gregory Park in Brainerd. Hosted by Brainerd Women of Today. Stop by for games, crafts and treats.

Wednesday, Aug. 19

  • Itasca County Fair - in Grand Rapids
  • P.E.O rummage sale - 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Christ Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids. Proceeds benefit education for women.
  • Presentation on mums - 1 p.m. at Crosslake Community Center, hosted by the Crosslake Garden Club

Thursday, Aug. 20

  • Itasca County Fair - in Grand Rapids
  • P.E.O rummage sale - 8 a.m.-noon at Christ Episcopal Church in Grand Rapids. Proceeds benefit education for women.
  • Noon Hour Concert - 12:15 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church in Park Rapids featuring Sarah Hamrin on viola
  • Family Discovery Day: Fossils X3 - 4-7 p.m. at Minnesota Discovery Center in Chisholm

Friday, Aug. 21

  • Itasca County Fair - in Grand Rapids
  • Summer Beach Party - 6-8 p.m. at South Shore Beach in Bemidji. Hosted by Beltrami Area Service Collaborative with free food, crafts, games and music.

Saturday, Aug. 22

  • Itasca County Fair - in Grand Rapids
  • Poker Run Fundraiser - 10 a.m. registration, 5 p.m. spaghetti dinner at Swampsiders ATV Club near Bigfork. Proceeds support those with ALS through the Never Surrender Blackwoods Blizzard Tour, and children with terminal illnesses through the Northern Lights Foundation.
  • Author talk - 1:30 p.m. at Itasca campus of Minnesota North College in Grand Rapids. William Kent Krueger will talk about his latest Cork O'Connor mystery, God's Country.
  • Iron Range Barn Dance - 2-5 p.m. at Mesaba Co-op Park in Hibbing. No experience or partners needed. After the dance, stay for an optional potluck.
  • Artist reception - 3-5 p.m. at Ripple River Gallery near Deerwood. Meet mixed media sculptor Rebne Karchefsky.
  • Family Forest Day - 3-6 p.m. at Diamond Point Park in Bemidji. Co-hosted by Peacemaker Resources, Bemidji State University, Apple Blossom Village and Northwest Minnesota Foundation. This free event offers campfire cooking, use of BSU motorless watercraft and nature-based activities and games.

Sunday, Aug. 23

  • Itasca County Fair - in Grand Rapids
  • "Broadway and the Big Screen" - 7 p.m. at Community Church of Walker. Bring your own chair for this free outdoor concert. In case of rain, the concert will be held inside the church.
