A home is protected by LP SmartSide siding.

Brian Gulseth and Jerry Asmus from LP discuss SmartSide products, made from local aspen. The "Forest products" series is produced by Mark Jacobs.

KAXE's Tuesday Morning Show strives to take an in-depth look at some natural resource-based issues important to Northern Minnesota. Producer Mark Jacobs and hosts Heidi Holtan and John Latimer discuss the problems and highlight some creative solutions.

Forestry in Northern Minnesota is a big business, and the KAXE Morning Show is beginning a series of conversations about forest products you may not know.

Built in 1985, the Louisiana Pacific mill in Two Harbors, MN specializes in siding. LP SmartSide products (siding, trim, shakes, etc.) are popularly used in home construction.  But most people are not aware that it’s made in Minnesota from sustainably harvested wood from MN forests.

Brian Gulseth and Jerry Asmus from LP joined the KAXE Morning Show to discuss this “Made in Minnesota” product and its attributes. We learned about their siding products, which are made primarily from aspen harvested from responsibly managed forests. The wood is broken down and reassembled into long-lasting siding that mimics natural wood, available in cedar and smooth textures, panels, lap siding, and shakes.

Aspen is sometimes called the “weed of the woods” for its ability to regenerate quickly.

Listen to the full conversation above.

This segment was produced by Mark Jacobs.
