Events Up North April 29-May 4: Middle school art exhibit, smelt fry

Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge is located five miles south of McGregor.

Events this week also include a Hwy 87 construction meeting in Hubbard, astronomy day and Ojibwe Star Wars in Hibbing, CHAIR's grand opening in Virginia and a craft event in Bigfork.

It's another busy week in Northern Minnesota. Here are some events to check out:

Tuesday, April 29

  • Bemidji Adventures in Lifelong Learning - 10 a.m. at Bemidji Eagles Club. Historian Mike Herbert will talk about area women who served in World War II.

  • Middle school art exhibit opening reception - 5 to 6:30 p.m. at Watermark Art Center in Bemidji
  • Hibbing High School presents Sense and Sensibility - 7 p.m. at Minnesota North - Hibbing campus auditorium
  • First Friday Art Walk - 4 to 7 p.m. at various location in Grand Rapids, including MacRostie Art Center
  • CHAIR Grand Opening - 5:30 p.m. at 510 Chestnut Street in Virginia. CHAIR stands for Cultures, Humanities and Arts on the Iron Range and was formerly known as the Lyric Center for the Arts. Ribbon cutting at 6:30 p.m. Special performance by select members of CHAIR’s production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid at 7 p.m. Free concert by PK Mayo at 7:30 p.m. Disco dance party at 9 p.m.
  • Open Mic & Coffeehouse - 6:30 p.m. at Headwaters Music and Arts in Bemidji. May's featured artist is Paul Olson.
  • 53rd annual AA Iron Range Get-Together - 5 p.m. registration opens at the Grand Rapids Eagles Club

Saturday, May 3

  • Spring Birding and Phenology Event - 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rice Lake National Wildlife Refuge, located 5 miles south of McGregor.
  • Beltrami Electric's 17th annual Multi-vendor Indoor Garage Sale - 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. at 4111 Technology Drive NW in Bemidji. $1 admission. All proceeds benefit United Way of Bemidji Area.
  • Star Wars Day celebration - 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Bemidji Public Library. Enjoy crafts and games all day, plus costumed characters from noon to 2 p.m.
  • Women's Fire Service Expo - 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Crosslake Fire Department
  • 53rd annual AA Iron Range Get-Together - 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. at the Grand Rapids Eagles Club
  • Husky Craft and Vendor Event - 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bigfork school gym
  • Bog Discovery: Naturalist on the Move - 2 to 3:30 p.m. at Lake Bemidji State Park
  • Backus Firefighters' 58th Annual Smelt Fry - 4 p.m. at the Backus Fire Hall
  • National Astronomy Day Celebration - 4 to 9 p.m. at Paulucci Space Theater in Hibbing. Games, activities and solar viewing begin at 4 p.m. Night sky telescope viewing at 8 p.m.
  • Hibbing High School presents Sense and Sensibility - 1 p.m. at Minnesota North - Hibbing campus auditorium

Sunday, May 4

  • Mewinzha waasa wedi giizhigong (Ojibwe language version of Star Wars: A New Hope) - 11:30 a.m. at Hibbing High School auditorium. Sponsored by Hibbing Community Education, plus Hibbing and Chisholm Indian Education. Free admission.
  • Bees 'n Brews - 1 to 3 p.m. at Rendezvous Brewing in Hackensack, hosted by the Cass County Soil & Water Conservation District. Learn how shoreline plants protect waters and support pollinators.
  • Hibbing High School presents Sense and Sensibility - 3 p.m. at Minnesota North - Hibbing campus auditorium
