CASS LAKE — Gabby Fineday was 22 points from breaking her coach's record heading into the Panthers' Jan. 10 game.
Martin Wind set Cass Lake-Bena's all-time scoring record in 2010, finishing his career with 2,622 points.
Fineday — who had just set the school's all-time girls' scoring record the day before — broke Coach Wind's record that night, but she didn't stop there. She went on to score nearly 400 more points, ending her career with 3,013 in total.
On a recent KAXE Morning Show, Fineday talked about her influences.
“My sister played when I started, so I was kind of like an underdog, and I was really fortunate to have a really good support system,” she said.
Fineday’s coach was also a shooting guard and helped her evolve into the role and find her place as a scorer and a leader on the team. She said, “He helped me in games and practice, and just helps my mentality too. Like what I mean to this team.”
Fineday takes her role as a leader seriously.
“Whether it’s scouting teams or reminding people what they do best and how I can help them succeed," she explained. "I think that’s my biggest thing right now.”
She’s excited to work on her game over the summer as she prepares to play collegiately at Bemidji State University. Fineday is the first Cass Lake-Bena girls player to play for BSU since 2007. She said she will be focusing on her speed over the summer.
"I’m quick for right now, but once I play against these bigger women athletes, I’m going to need to get into the weight room and maybe focus on my mid-range,” she said.
“I’m just really looking forward to playing with my new team. I really love my new coach, Chelsea.”
