GRAND RAPIDS — While we've had some warm days in March, ice conditions in Northern Minnesota are holding up, at least for walking or all-terrain vehicles.
The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources reminds us conditions can change rapidly. They advise you to ask about local ice conditions, wear a life jacket and bring ice picks.
The KAXE Morning Show's Early Bird Fishing Guide Jeff Sundin suggests walking is the safest bet right now, instead of using a vehicle to get on the ice.
He noted perch fishing on Mille Lacs Lake, with great spots "not all that far away from shore, even though it's a gigantic lake."
"And it sounds like a daunting task," he continued. "There are places where you can park and get off, especially on the west side, along Highway 169.
"There's quite a number of places that you will fit to a spot and have a chance of being able to catch some fish, so I wouldn't think about going out there with any heavy duty stuff."
Sundin also mentioned the MN-FISH Angler's Summit happening on Thursday, March 27, at the Timberlake Lodge in Grand Rapids.
Topics on the agenda include forward-facing sonar, Minnesota's walleye possession limit, bait supply issues, musky and northern pike management, and fish stocking plans in Minnesota. It's free to attend as long as you register for it.
