President of the Minnesota Forestry Association Brian Huberty joined the KAXE Morning Show as part of the "Minnesota Forest History” series, produced by Mark Jacobs.

KAXE's Tuesday Morning Show strives to take an in-depth look at some natural resource-based issues important to Northern Minnesota. Producer Mark Jacobs and hosts Heidi Holtan and John Latimer discuss the problems and highlight some creative solutions.

The Minnesota Forestry Association was formed nearly 150 years ago to promote healthy forests with a focus on tree planting.

Over those many years, the association's activity has been variable and included exhibits at the World’s Fair in 1893 and the first Minnesota highway map in 1917.

After several years of inactivity, MFA was revitalized in the 1980s with a focus on Minnesota family forests. Family forests, which are forest lands owned by private individuals, make up approximately 40% of Minnesota’s forest acreage.

Current MFA initiatives include improving communication among all forestland owners, creating a more accurate forest inventory of family forest lands, and assisting family forest owners in adapting to a changing climate.

MFA President Brian Huberty joined the KAXE Morning Show to discuss the past and present of this influential organization.

Funding for this project was provided by the Minnesota Environment and Natural Resources Trust Fund as recommended by the Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources (LCCMR).
