Grand Rapids celebrates the arts with the First Friday Art Walk on Feb. 2. Art, baking, music and more celebrate a rural community with a thriving arts culture.

GRAND RAPIDS — While it’s still technically winter, there’s plenty going on as Grand Rapids Arts presents the First Friday Art Walk 4-7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 2.

MacRostie Art Center Executive Director Katie Marshall joined the KAXE Morning Show to discuss details.

The gallery celebrates the group exhibition “Northern Landscapes” with an artist reception 4-5:30 p.m. Visit with feature artist Serenity Crego and additional artists who have work included in the show.

Benders

Gitona King will be at Benders. She is from Cookies on the Range, a custom cookie bakery with any design or art you can imagine.

“Portrayals in Paper: Tales of Overcoming” opens in the MacRostie Gallery with paper quilling art by Nikki Besser. There is a reception with food, wine and other refreshments from 4-7 p.m. and an artist talk at 6 p.m.

In a conversation on the KAXE Morning Show, Marshall said people don’t realize they are looking at paper.

“They immediately say, ‘Oh, this looks so cool,’ and they think it’s a painting,” she said.

Marshall told people to get closer to see the intricacy of the paper in the large-scale work.
