Fact: An American named Sylvia Beach opened a bookstore selling English language books in Paris in 1919. She called the bookstore Shakespeare and Company. Also a fact: in 1922 Sylvia was the first to publish James Joyce’s classic and controversial novel Ulysses, long heralded as one of the most important works of modern literature.

What happened in between has been left to the imagination of writer Kerri Maher. She created the backstory of Sylvia Beach’s time in france in her new novel The Paris Bookseller.
