Marshall Helmberger Breaks Story on U.S. Steel's Request For Weaker Water Standards at Dark River

www.timberjay.com

Today Timberjay editor and publisher Marshall Helmberger told us about the request by U.S. Steel to weaken water quality standards at the Dark River near Virginia, MN.  Minn Tac's tailings ponds disharge seeps into the Dark River and the MPCA is seriously considering the corporation's request.  The Timberjay also editorialized on this issue of water quality standards this week.

Marshall also filled us in on the Border Route Challenge from International Falls to Grand Portage.  It's a canoeing/portaging 260 mile classic canoe route from Voyageur days that had previously had a record held in 1968 of 80 hours and 20 minutes.  Minnesotans Peter Wagner and Matt Peterson completed the challenge in just 69 hours.  This means no camping, no sleeping and constant canoeing - in the day and the night for 260 miles.  Not surprisingly they said by the time they completed the challenge they were practically delusional on lack of sleep and physical exhaustion.

Marshall also filled us in on the Cook Timber Days and National Sauna Day in Embarrass this weekend.  Kicking off another busy season of small town events and celebrations.
