From spokenword poetry to a hip-hop, R&B and rock "rager," there's a lot of music to checkout around the area this week.
Starting things off this Wednesday at 6 p.m., Rosetta Peters and JG Everest will be at Room 203 in the Old Central School in Grand Rapids. Peters is an accomplished poet and spoken word artist of Yankton, Crow Creek and Oglala descent. She’ll be reciting her poems over the music of multi-instrumentalist Everest, a member of groups like Roma Di Luna and Lateduster. The pair have one album out, The Hummingbird’s Dance, from 2022.
On Thursday, La Vent Du Nord is bringing the traditional music of Quebec to the Ripple Center in Aitkin at 7 p.m. Active since 2002, the French language group has won multiple Juno Awards with a progressive folk sound that draws from bluegrass and Celtic music traditions.
Folk-rock band MorningBird is playing two times in Grand Rapids this weekend, doing a double header at the Eagles Club, Friday and Saturday night at 8:30 p.m. The Hibbing quartet plays a mix of originals and covers with prominent fiddle from lead singer Jill Burkes.
Finally, there are seven acts playing Saturday evening at Rail River Folk School in Bemidji, beginning at 8 p.m. Hosted and headlined by local rapper DC Univer7se, DC's Major Rager event includes local musicians KMRE (R&B) and Blackfishbleu (rock) alongside Twin Cities rappers Gemini Playboy, Ephrem Lamar, XLR8 and Luhh Capo.
