We are always thankful for the musicians who make up our local music scene, but let's give them some extra flowers this week. Here are four shows for you in the days after Turkey Day.
Doyle Turner and Sarah Morris are together again 6 p.m. Friday at the Popple Bar in Laporte. The pair collaborated on Turner's 2024 album Paper Maps, and both are talented singer-songwriters who blend jazz, country and pop. Morris just released a new album called Say Yes in October.
In Grand Rapids, another songwriting duo is playing 6 p.m. Friday at Rapids Brewing. Nate Boots and Mal Murphy are up from their home in Rochester, bringing original Americana and folk-rock to Grand Rapids. Boots is a longtime member of the Minnesota scene, leading bands like The High Horses, Porchlights and Jim The Harpooner. Murphy is an up-and-coming musician who recently put out a great new single called "Sugar."
A little later Friday in Grand Rapids, The Brothers Burn Mountain are playing 7 p.m. at Klockow Brewing. The eclectic duo from Cotton recently celebrated 25 years as a band and released a best-of album for the occasion. Their energetic and drum-heavy live show blends psychedelic blues, rock and folk. Look for an exclusive KAXE interview with the duo in the next couple of weeks!
Finally, Dave Simonett is playing 7 p.m. Saturday at the Reif Center in Grand Rapids. The Trampled by Turtles frontman returns to the Reif after an early 2024 sold-out show with his group Dead Man Winter. Since that show, both groups recorded versions of his tunes on the Always Here / Always Now album, and Trampled backed up Alan Sparhawk on his gutwrenching solo album released in May. Simonett recently spoke to KAXE's Kari Hedlund about the show this Saturday.
