St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsay states the incarcerated person's death followed a medical emergency in a Duluth cell on Aug. 8, 2026.

DULUTH — A person died Saturday, Aug. 8, while in custody at the St. Louis County Jail.

In a news release, St. Louis County Sheriff Gordon Ramsay stated correctional officers in Duluth responded to a medical emergency in a cell around 1:10 a.m. Saturday.

Emergency personnel from the Duluth Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance also responded.

Lifesaving measures listed in the release included CPR and the use of an automated external defibrillator, or AED.

Despite the efforts, the person did not regain consciousness and was pronounced dead.

“The Sheriff's office wishes to extend our condolences to the family for their loss,” the news release stated.

The name of the person who died was being withheld Monday, pending investigation and family notification.

By request of the sheriff's office, the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension is conducting an independent investigation “to ensure transparency and avoid any potential conflict of interest.”
