Boys basketball: Pequot Lakes 3rd, Red Lake County 4th at state

The Patriots beat conference rivals Albany in the third-place game, and the Rebels lost to Henning to finish fourth.

ST. PAUL — The Pequot Lakes Patriots beat Granite Ridge Conference rivals Albany 55-50 to take home third place in Class 2A at the boys state basketball tournament Saturday, March 28, at Concordia University.

The Patriots scored 20 points off turnovers, according to the Minnesota State High School League, ending the game on an 8-0 run.

It’s the Patriots' best finish of their five-season tourney run. Pequot Lakes advanced to the semifinals after beating Blake 69-60 but fell to the eventual champions, Minnehaha Academy, 50-46.

In Class A, the Red Lake County Rebels finished fourth in their second-ever tournament appearance. Henning won the matchup 79-67, coming back from a 36-30 deficit at the half. Senior Will Gieseke led the Rebels with 25 points.

Red Lake County lost 67-58 to Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton in the semifinals after beating Liberty Classical Academy 85-63 in the first round.

Geiseke was named to the all-tournament team, as were Pequot Lakes sophomore Gus McKenna and junior Sam Afagwu.
