CASS LAKE — A rural Cass Lake couple died Friday, Jan. 30, after a train struck their vehicle in rural northern Hubbard County.
The Burlington Northern Santa Fe train conductor reported the crash just before 10 a.m., according to a news release from the Hubbard County Sheriff's Office.
The driver, Douglas Stewart, 61, and his wife, Tiffany, 42, were southbound on County Road 101. They stopped at the railroad crossing sign about 4 miles west of Cass Lake in Farden Township as the train approached from the east.
The sheriff's office's investigation showed that as the train approached the intersection, Stewart crossed the tracks and the vehicle was struck by the train.
Both were pronounced dead at the scene.
The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident.
