GRAND RAPIDS — The Community Café in Grand Rapids is moving to the Itasca County Family YMCA beginning in the new year.
The organization that serves free, hot and nutritious meals to anyone who needs them has been operating out of the Kiesler Wellness Center for many years. Its final meal there will be Dec. 23.
"The Café extends heartfelt gratitude to the entire Kiesler community — including staff, leadership, and stakeholders — for their generosity and hospitality, which have played a vital role in its ability to serve countless neighbors over the years," a news release stated.
Executive Director John Weber stated the transition to the new location is an important next step for the nearly 25-year-old group, describing the partnership with the YMCA as "natural and meaningful."
"Widely recognized as a central gathering place for the Grand Rapids community, the YMCA offers an accessible and welcoming environment for people of all ages," the release stated. "This strong alignment of values makes the collaboration especially fitting for both organizations."
Meal service at the Y will begin Jan. 6 and take place 4:30-6 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday.
The Community Café also serves meals in Deer River at King Elementary School, where meals are offered Monday through Thursday each week.
