EAST GRAND FORKS — An improvised charger for an e-cigarette is believed responsible for a fire at an East Grand Forks treatment facility.
The East Grand Forks Fire Department responded to multiple fire alarms at 2:36 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3, at Douglas Place, 1111 Gateway Drive NE.
Firefighters observed heavy smoke in the hallways of the building. Crews quickly located the source of the fire in a second-floor room and fought the blaze.
The fire department was assisted by the East Grand Forks Police Department and Altru ambulance.
All occupants were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported among residents, staff or emergency personnel.
The cause of the fire was due to an electrical arc from an improvised charging device being used to charge a disposable e-cigarette, according to a news release.
The East Grand Forks Fire Department reminded people of the following fire safety tips:
- Inspect chargers regularly, replace anything frayed or hot and avoid charging on beds or under pillows where heat can build up.
- Unplug chargers when not in use, especially overnight or when leaving home.
- Bending or twisting cables weakens internal wires and increases arcing.
- Follow manufacturer guidelines on the proper use of chargers and charging cables.
