Crosby-Ironton's Tori Oehrlein and Rock Ridge's doubles team of Mattelyn Seppi and Ayla Troutwine advanced Thursday, Oct. 23, to the semifinals at the Minnesota State High School League's girls tennis tournament.
Fifteen individual athletes from Northern Minnesota competed in the girls tennis singles and doubles state tournament Thursday and Friday in the Twin Cities.
C-I basketball star Oehrlein aims to end her senior tennis season on a high note after losing in the second round last year. She won two matches Thursday to advance to the Class A semifinals, defeating Olivia Danielson of Minnewaska (6-2, 6-1) and Brooke Boland of Pine City (6-4, 7-5).
She will face Chloe Alley of Minnehaha Academy at 8 a.m. Friday at Reed-Sweatt Tennis Center in Minneapolis, where all the Class A action is taking place.
Rock Ridge seniors Seppi and Troutwine are the No. 5 seed in the Class 2A double tourney. They beat Anna Hageman and Claire Beaver of Chisago Lakes 6-4, 6-1 on Thursday morning to move on to Round 2. There, they faced Kylie Southworth and Ella Dirks of St. Peter, winning the match after losing the first set — 3-6, 7-6 (3), 7-5.
The Rock Ridge duo is set to face unranked Josie Brown and Katie Jung of Academy of Holy Angels at 8 a.m. Friday at Life Time Bloomington South, the home of Class 2A.
A number of Rock Ridge athletes competed in the singles and doubles categories after they contributed to a first-place finish in the team tourney earlier in the week.

Staples-Motley junior Ronnie Noska won her first match Thursday, defeating Emma Siert of Lake City 6-2, 6,3. But she lost in the second round to Nellie Larson of St. Paul Academy and Summit School. she was the 2024 Class A singles consolation runner-up.
East Grand Forks senior Ruby Leach rounded out the Northland competitors in the Class A singles tournament. She lost in the first round to Leah Maddock of Osakis 6-1, 6-1, but saw success in the consolation bracket. She beat Lydia Sweep of Morris-MACA/WCA Co-op, and is set to face Siert in the consolation semis Friday morning.
In Class A doubles, Pequot Lakes’ senior Nikki Crocker and sophomore Emme Sullivan defeated fellow unranked pair Anna Fiemeyer and Kaylee Endres, Wadena-Deer Creek seniors, in the first round — 7-5, 7-5. They then lost to Isla Dille and Molly Patten of Litchfield in the second round, 6-0, 6-1.
Fiemeyer and Endres moved to the consolation bracket, where they defeated Osakis pair Bella Weisser and Ava Drevlow. They'll take on Maahi Bhalla and Solveig Rahm of Mounds Park Academy in the semifinals Friday morning.
Thief River Falls seniors Braylee Wienen and Piper Greene also competed Thursday, falling to No. 1-ranked doubles team Abbey Perry and Addie Berman of Breck in the first round.
They, too, saw success in the consolations, winning against Tara Beyer and Emily McGinty of Benson/KMS Co-Op and advancing to the semis. Friday morning, they'll kick off the day by facing Sophia Nerison and Livia Tennessen of Cannon Falls.
Class 2A
Rock Ridge junior Mayme Scott was the fourth seed and advanced to the second round in singles by defeating Sienna Szerda of The Blake School, 6-0, 6-1. Scott then fell to No. 5 Madeline Bergerson of Hill Murray 7-6 (4), 6-0.
Her eight-grade teammate Ellie Dimberio also played in the singles tourney as an unranked competitor, losing to No. 2 Elizabeth Payne of the Academy of Holy Angels, 6-1, 6-1, in the first round.
Dimberio went on to win in the first round of the consolation bracket, however, blanking Gracie Conzemius of Becker 6-0, 6-0. She faces Brielle Romasiewicz of St. Peter in the consolation semifinals 8 a.m. Friday at Life Time Bloomington South.
Unranked juniors Emmi Peterson and Nina Paulsen dropped their doubles match in the first round to No. 3 Catherine Sorenson and Mollie Hollerman of Orono, 6-2, 6-4.
But they won their next match in the first round of the consolation bracket, defeating Mae Breunig and Audrey Wolff of Benilde-St. Margaret's School 6-2, 6-4. They'll compete 8 a.m. Friday in the consolation semifinals against Margaux Letts and Natalie Salfer of St. Peter.
