CROMWELL — Two people died in an all-terrain vehicle crash in rural Carlton County on Saturday, Aug. 23.
A 911 caller reported the crash just before 9:20 p.m. on Ditch Bank Forest Road in Progress Township, an unorganized territory in northern Carlton County, according to the Carlton County Sheriff's Office.
Lisa Jo Westendorf, 48, of Cloquet and Glen Alan Burdick, 59, of Homestead, Iowa, were dead on the scene.
Deputies learned they had been separated from their group of riders, and someone from the group found them with the side-by-side overturned in water in the ditch.
Others in the group attempted CPR but were unsuccessful, according to the sheriff's office news release.
The sheriff's office said Burdick was thought to have been driving.
The crash is under investigation.
Fond du Lac Police and conservation officers, Department of Natural Resources conservation officers and Cromwell-Wright Area Fire District also responded to the incident.
