Northern Minnesota has a new state champion.
No. 5 Red Lake County captured the 1A baseball title Saturday, June 14, at Target Field, beating No. 2 New Ulm Cathedral 15-7.
It's the Rebels' first state championship. Junior third-baseman Kegan Schmitz went 3-for-4 and tied a state tournament record with six runs batted in, according to the state high school league.
The win caps off a "glorious year" for Red Lake County, MSHSL's John Millea wrote. The football team was the section runner-up. The boys basketball team went 31-3, taking third at state. The boys hockey team went 21-5, and Hayden Shulstad was the state Discussion champion.
Schmitz, Will Gieske, Collin Taggart and Ben Gullingsrud made the all-tournament team, as did South Ridge’s Gavin Willeck and, in 3A, Grand Rapids’ Sam Dick.
