BRIMSON — Two wildfires burning in Northern Minnesota are holding steady in size despite variable fire weather conditions.
The Jenkins Creek fire has burned 16,091 acres since beginning 14 miles southeast of Hoyt Lakes on May 12. Containment increased by 10% since last week, now at 94%.
The fire was one of two in the Brimson Complex. Updates ended for the Camp House Fire on May 29.
Crews are using drones to improve mapping of the fire perimeter and find hot spots. Work is also underway to repair roads impacted by firefighting.
The Horse River Fire in the Boundary Waters is 13 acres, smaller than the initial estimate of 20-25 acres. The fire is burning in a remote area of the wilderness north of Ely. It remains without containment.
Two crews specializing in remote firefighting have suppressed areas of heat and are working to map the perimeter of the fire.
Recent light rain did little to increase moisture and ease conditions. But cooler temperatures will help. The management team says a drying trend will begin Wednesday, June 4, but moderate weather should allow crews to continue to make progress on both fires.
