The construction at the intersection of highways 169 and 25 will end in early August 2025 and make one of the most dangerous intersections in the county safer.

KINNEY — Construction on a J-turn at highways 169 and 25 in Great Scott Township, south of Kinney, begins Monday, June 2.

Travelers on Highway 169 should expect delays, as traffic will be reduced to one lane in each direction. Traffic on Highway 25 will be detoured through median openings on 169.

The intersection ranks in the top 1% for risk in St. Louis County, with seven crashes between 2014 and 2023, including a T-bone crash that killed two, the county said.

"J-turn intersections are proven to reduce serious and fatal crashes because they eliminate or reduce motorists having to cross multiple lanes of traffic," the county said in a news release.

St. Louis County Public Works is partnering with the Minnesota Department of Transportation on the project.

Construction is expected to be completed by early August.
