The communications cooperative plans to add 1,600 locations to its fiber-optic, high-speed internet network, with four projects in St. Louis County planned this year.

GRAND RAPIDS — Paul Bunyan Communications is expanding its high-speed, all-fiber optic network to over 1,600 more locations in St. Louis County this year.

According to a news release, four projects are planned in townships around St. Louis and Itasca counties.

A state grant will partially fund two projects, one south of Cook and one north of Chisholm, through Minnesota's Low-Population Program. The grant provides over $5 million for the expansion of those two projects, and Paul Bunyan Communications is investing more than $1.8 million, with some of the townships also contributing.

Projects south and east of Britt and around Side Lake are partially funded through a federal grant. The USDA ReConnect 3 Grant program is contributing more than $10 million for this expansion project, estimated to cost at least nearly $14 million.

“We are excited to announce these plans to expand to more areas of St. Louis County to deliver gigabit broadband, ensuring that those without reliable internet access can stay connected. In today’s world, internet access is not a luxury, it is a necessity," stated Chad Bullock, Paul Bunyan Communications CEO and general manager, in the release.

"Our cooperative remains committed to growing our network, bringing this essential service to more homes and businesses across northern Minnesota.”

Construction will take place over the summer, with service expected to be available by winter.
