Morrison, Hernandez advance in Bois Forte special election for chair

Travis Morrison and Carlos A. Hernandez were the top vote-getters of the six band members running in the special election to finish the term of former Chair Cathy Chavers.

NETT LAKE — Travis Morrison and Carlos A. Hernandez will advance to the general election for Bois Forte Band of Chippewa chairperson.

Morrison and Hernandez were the top two vote-getters of the six band members running for chairperson in a special primary on Tuesday, April 15.

Morrison previously represented Nett Lake on the Tribal Council. He received 139 of the 407 votes cast, or 34.15%, according to the certified results shared by the band.

Hernandez is a housing maintenance technician for the band on the Vermilion side of Bois Forte and unsuccessfully ran for chairperson last year. He garnered 116 votes, or 28.5% of the vote Tuesday.

Cathy Chavers stepped down as chairperson in January to focus on her mental health, just months after beginning her third term in July. The winner of the June 17 general election will serve out the term, which ends in 2028.
