VIRGINIA — Two candidates are running to fill a vacancy on the Rock Ridge School Board, both of whom served on the same board very recently.

Pollyann Sorcan and Brandi Lautigar filed for the special election set for April 8.

Sorcan was removed from the board in November and is running to fill the same seat. The term expires after the 2026 election.

The board removed Pollycan Sorcan after an investigation found she forwarded confidential emails to her private account and supported lawsuits against the district.

In a lengthy resolution, board members said Sorcan prioritized her personal interests over the board’s and undermined its decisions by attempting to overturn or help others overturn the decision to demolish old school buildings.

She had spent more than 20 years on the Rock Ridge and former Eveleth-Gilbert school boards and has sued both districts on separate occasions. Sorcan has a pending appeal in her most recent suit against the district.

Lautigar, whose term expired earlier this month, was appointed in December to fill the vacant seat until the special election. She was first elected to the Eveleth-Gilbert School Board in 2016.
