BEMIDJI — Bemidji State University’s head volleyball coach Kevin Ulmer died Tuesday, Sept. 17, after suffering from cancer.
An announcement from the BSU athletics department stated the 41-year-old coach leaves behind his wife and three daughters.
Ulmer began as the head coach of the BSU volleyball program in 2016. He was previously the head coach at Bethel College in Indiana.
According to BSU, Ulmer’s student-athletes have consistently been atop the ranks in the classroom and have won multiple academic awards. He also coached two All-Conference selections in what the college called the toughest conference in Division II volleyball.
In the statement, Bemidji State Director of Athletics Britt Lauritsen said, "Kevin was a man of deep faith, of pure love for his family, of wholehearted dedication to his team and to Bemidji State Volleyball. The manner in which he lived will carry on in the lives of the women he has coached, and in all of us in the department, the community and beyond who love and care about Kevin.”
A celebration of life Service for Ulmer will be 2 p.m. Monday, Sept. 23, at the Evangelical Covenant Church in Bemidji. Two online fundraisers have been established to help support the family.
