Lutsen Lodge in Lutsen was destroyed by a fire Feb. 6, 2024.

Among outstanding violations was the lack of inspection reports for the lodge’s sprinkler and fire alarm systems, but the fire marshal says its too early to determine if these played a role.

LUTSEN — The Minnesota State Fire Marshal’s office released Lutsen Lodge’s most recent inspection for fire safety after a Tuesday, Feb. 6, fire destroyed the historic resort’s main lodge.

The last inspection there took place in July 2023, and the inspector found seven violations, four of which were repaired by the property owner. Among the outstanding violations was the lack of inspection reports for the lodge’s sprinkler and fire alarm systems.

A news release stated it’s too early in the investigation to determine if the three remaining violations played a role in the fire.

By state statute, hotels, motels and buildings used for lodging with six or more guest rooms are inspected for fire safety once every three years.

The state fire marshal’s office reported it cannot predict how long the investigation will take due to the magnitude of this fire. Specific details about the investigation cannot be released in the meantime, according to state law.

In the release, the state’s chief fire investigator said he understands the public wants answers, but it would be irresponsible for the agency to offer insights until the investigation is concluded.

Cook County Dispatch was notified just after midnight Tuesday that staff reported smoke coming from the lobby floor. There were no guests on site and no injuries were reported, but the building was a total loss.

The Lutsen Fire Department was suppressing hot spots at the property using sprinklers throughout the day Wednesday.

The resort was originally founded by a Swedish immigrant in 1885. A Facebook post said it plans to rebuild.
