BEMIDJI — No injuries were reported after a plane landing went awry on Upper Red Lake Tuesday morning.
Beltrami County Sheriff Jason Riggs reports two people were in a plane from Grand Rapids to spend the day on Upper Red Lake fishing.
According to a news release, the pilot identified what he believed was a safe landing area, but the absence of snow resulted in the plane being unable to slow down. The plane slid into an area of thin ice, with the nose of the aircraft breaking through into open water.
The two occupants were assisted to shore by fellow anglers, brought to a local resort and were provided dry clothing.
Sheriff Riggs said the pilot has made contact with a recovery operation to extricate the plane from the water.
Upper Red Lake, a popular ice fishing destination, has already seen a flurry of activity this hard water season, with dozens of anglers rescued off the water Sunday after high winds caused a shelf of ice to break away from shore.
