Baxter crash kills pedestrian in crosswalk

A 61-year-old Baxter woman was killed while crossing Highway 371 early in the morning on Thursday, Nov. 30.

BAXTER — A 61-year-old Baxter woman was killed while crossing Highway 371 early Thursday morning, Nov. 30.

The Minnesota State Patrol reported a pickup truck driven by a 45-year-old Pierz man struck the pedestrian in the crosswalk just after 6 a.m.

Anthony Sobiech was in a 2010 Toyota Tacoma, heading north on 371 in Baxter. The pedestrian, 61-year-old Ludivina Wirtz, was crossing the highway in the south crosswalk of the Woida Road intersection.

Wirtz was pronounced dead at the scene.

Roads were described as dry at the time of the crash by authorities.

The Brainerd and Baxter police departments, Crow Wing County Sheriff's Office, Brainerd Fire Department and North Memorial Health Ambulance assisted at the scene.
