Anne McKeig
Anne McKeig and Katie Carter

Area Voices tells the arts, culture and history stories of northern Minnesota.  In this segment of Area Voices, we learn about a native northern Minnesotan who is making history.  Anne McKeig is a descendent of the White Earth Nation.  She grew up in Federal Dam, MN, became a lawyer and went on to become a family court judge for Hennepin County, advocating for native children.  She’s now a MN State Supreme Court Justice - the first one of Native American descent.  In addition her work at the MN Supreme Court, Justice McKeig is also a law professor at Mitchell Hamline School of Law.  She was in Bemidji recently and stopped by the KBXE studio to speak with Area Voices host Katie Carter about her life path,  the importance of diversity on the court, and the positive impact of mentors in people's lives.

Katie Carter started at Northern Community Radio in 2008 as Managing Editor of the station's grant-funded, online news experiment Northern Community Internet. She returned for a second stint in 2016-23. She produced Area Voices showcasing the arts, culture, and history stories of northern Minnesota.
