In 2019 during Bemidji State University's Centennial celebration, informational banners were intstalled across the campus telling the university’s stories of the past 100 years. One such banner caught the eye of criminal justice professor Dr. Mike Herbert. It read: 1941-1945 20 former students killed in WWII. As an amateur WWII historian, Mike’s curiosity led him on an investigation to find out who these student were. And the result of his research can be found in his debut book Leaving Campus: a World War II Epitaph.
