BRAINERD — A new exhibit of artwork by Elsie Husom is on display at the Brainerd Public Library until June.

The exhibit includes 20 pieces of mixed media, alcohol inks and acrylic paintings. The artwork on display at the library includes not only a mix of mediums used, but representational as well as abstract subject matters, a news release stated.

While Husom admires representational artists, abstract collage or assemblage remains her favorite, according to the library. Often she will paint her own papers to achieve a certain color or pattern.

The pieces are put together, arranged and rearranged, oftentimes over a period of weeks until Husom is satisfied with what evolves, the release stated. Other times, she will challenge herself with an idea for using certain colors, composition or shapes and sketch out a plan before assemblage.

Two pieces by artist Elsie Husom. One depicts a lighthouse with the light reflecting on the water and the other is an abstract piece featuring various shades of blue.

Acrylic pouring, alcohol inks, photography, fiber and paper weaving, and urban grunge are all different media and techniques Husom has used.

“The often-unexpected outcomes from acrylic pouring and alcohol inks add to my fun of making art,” Husom said.

Husom is an active charter member of The Crossing Arts Alliance, was editor of the newsletter for 20-plus years and volunteered in other activities. Her work has been shown at various art fairs, Brainerd Congregational United Church and Crossing Arts.

Lily Atwel and Husom piloted the women’s art program at the Crow Wing County Jail, which they taught for eight years.
