On the River

When did you start volunteering at the station?

2022

How did you first hear about KAXE?

Spinning the radio dial from Duluth to Grand Rapids on US Hwy 2. I just happened upon it! I am certain it was a Robbie Fulks song a volunteer DJ was spinning one weekday morning that caught my ear and never let go!

Your favorite recent album or artist?

Jon Batiste - "Big Money"

Who got you into music?

My Mom! Vividly recall her playing Beatles’ "Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band" when I was five years young.

Most memorable concert or festival?

February 11, 1984, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble at Shryock Auditorium - Southern Illinois University.

Tell us about your favorite KAXE memory.

Seeing how the station, its members and listeners responded to cuts in federal funding last year. Everyone stepped up and made KAXE better for it!

Favorite fellow on-air DJ at KAXE?

Debra Ann

What hobbies do you have outside of DJing?

I substitute teach in Bloomington Public School District, and travel globally while attempting to stay healthy!

What's a musical ick for you?

About the only musical genre I can’t take is head banging hard core thrash or doom metal.

Prince or Dylan?

Robert Prince!

KAXE is turning 50 in 2026! Why should KAXE exist for another 50 years?

KAXE adds so much to the northern Minnesota community! Its local reporting, focus on local stories, phenology programs, weekday morning shows, and other weekly programming is unmatched in its quality, content, and creativeness. GO KAXE GO KBXE GO!

Dave's 50 Songs

In honor of KAXE turning 50, we asked our volunteers to send us a playlist of 50 songs that help tell their musical story.

Here is a link to hear Dave's playlist from a recent On the River to play on your preferred streaming platform (Spotify link below).

Dan was born on the south side of Chicago and remembers dancing to Booker T and the MG's as his 1st musical memory. What followed has been a lifelong adventure of hearing new music and being exposed to the people and communities that produced the artists. Forwards in all directions!
