Which shows do you DJ?

On the River

When did you start volunteering at the station?

2012

How did you first hear about KAXE?

We moved from Red Wing area to BJI in 1985 for a job. Surfed the "radio wasteland" of northern radio, looking for something worth listening to. Found it, but the signal was weak in Bemidji back then, frustratingly so. The Bagley tower made all the difference!

Your favorite recent album or artist?

Mavis Staples, Sad & Beautiful World

Who got you into music?

I grew up in MSP in a time of great music with lots of opportunities to hear it live. KQRS FM started in 1966, playing rock and blues and promoting folk music at coffee houses. Tony Glover had a late night "underground music" program (on KDWB).

Tell us about your favorite KAXE memory.

We discovered KAXE in 1985 and loved listening but didn't become members right away since we'd just moved here and had little money to spare. But we had previously supported WCAL, an early public radio station in Northfield, so we believed in community radio. In '86, I think, KAXE had a giveaway for tickets to a folk fest at Lutsen. We called and won the tickets, but were encouraged to be members... so we did. Members ever since!

Favorite fellow on-air DJ at KAXE?

David John

What hobbies do you have outside of DJing?

Travel, camping, birding, enjoying the lake. Love walking along the Pacific and in the redwoods!

What's a musical ick for you?

Soulless, childlike vocals

Prince or Dylan?

Dylan

KAXE is turning 50 in 2026! Why should KAXE exist for another 50 years?

We've come too far to go back. This truly is Community Radio with a personal connection to real people! It provides a much-needed service to people in the community as we become more disconnected through our devices.

Jeff's 50 Songs

In honor of KAXE's birthday, we asked our volunteers to send us a playlist of 50 songs that help tell their musical story. Jeff's picks include public radio favorites Lucinda Williams, Steve Earle, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and others alongside new songs from Molly Tuttle, Waxahatchee and more.

Find Jeff's 50 songs here to play on your preferred streaming platform.

Dan was born on the south side of Chicago and remembers dancing to Booker T and the MG's as his 1st musical memory. What followed has been a lifelong adventure of hearing new music and being exposed to the people and communities that produced the artists. Forwards in all directions!
