The Wood Brothers are back with their ninth album, Puff of Smoke, and once again they’ve delivered that distinct blend of country, Americana and just a touch of blues.
Brothers Chris and Oliver Wood, along with multi-instrumentalist and producer Jano Rix, have built a career on songs that feel lived-in yet adventurous — and this record keeps that streak alive.
On Puff of Smoke, the trio leans into the chaos and humor of the current human experience.
Sonically, they play with New Orleans brass, Cuban rhythms, a kitschy nod to circus sounds and roots rock with plenty of drive. The result is an album that surprises at every turn while still sounding unmistakably like The Wood Brothers.
Opener “Witness” taps straight into that New Orleans energy, complete with brass accents and unexpected twists.
“Pray God Listens” is sly and playful, tackling serious world issues with a wink. Its chorus imagines God not just hearing their song but singing along.
Nearing the end of the album, “Slow Rise to the Middle” serves as a standout track and a perfect pivot point into the last couple of songs of the record.
Throughout Puff of Smoke, the band keeps their sense of humor front and center, weaving self-deprecating asides into songs that also carry a core of real wisdom. It’s a reflection of how they approach music itself — deeply passionate about the craft but never too precious about it.
That spirit of collaboration, also showcased during Oliver Wood’s recent solo project Fat Cat Silhouette, carries through here.
With Puff of Smoke, The Wood Brothers continue to connect with their trademark sound while keeping the listener engaged and ready for whatever musical curveball they throw next.
